James Cameron did not just write a love story, he built a ship. He spent six months researching the Titanic’s crew and passengers and assembled a detailed timeline of events that was verified by historical experts. That foundation let him borrow freely from the 1958 film 'A Night to Remember', a movie he had seen as a youth, lifting dialogue and scenes such as the steerage party and the musicians playing as the ship sank. To make the romance feel larger than the voyage, he conceived the character of elderly Rose to frame the story across time, a device meant to make the intervening years feel emotionally significant to the audience.

Rose was not an easy get. Kate Winslet campaigned aggressively for the part, sending Cameron daily notes from England and later mailing a single rose with a card signed 'From Your Rose', a push that eventually convinced him to cast her. Jack was almost a different kind of gamble. Leonardo DiCaprio initially did not want the role and refused to focus during his first romantic scene reading, yet Cameron saw potential in him and imagined the character along the lines of James Stewart or Gregory Peck rather than brooding and neurotic. The choice came at a cost for DiCaprio, who turned down the lead role in 'Boogie Nights' to star in 'Titanic', a decision he later regretted in 2025, calling 'Boogie Nights' a profound film of his generation.

the ones who got away
The cast that almost was reads like an alternate history. Tom Cruise was interested in playing Jack but his asking price was too high for Cameron to consider. Matthew McConaughey auditioned for the role but was disregarded because he refused to change his Southern accent. Billy Crudup turned down an audition for Jack to star in 'Without Limits', and later said in 2000 that the film would not have been as successful if he had accepted. The film’s most unexpected anchor was elderly Rose herself. Gloria Stuart was cast at 87 after Cameron asked casting director Mali Finn to find retired actresses from Hollywood’s Golden Age, though he did not initially know who Stuart was, and her presence gave the decades-spanning frame its quiet weight.
