- The screenplay was adapted from William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, inspired after the writers watched Clueless and set out to create a contemporary high-school version of a classic play.
- Julia Stiles was cast as Kat Stratford after director Gil Junger met her for just 10 minutes and immediately offered her the role, following a recommendation from casting director Marcia Ross.
- Heath Ledger was brought in for a casting session just three and a half weeks before filming began, and director Gil Junger was immediately inspired by him for the role of Patrick Verona.
- The character of Patrick Verona was inspired by Judd Nelson's role in The Breakfast Club.
- Heath Ledger's iconic bleachers singing scene, one of the most memorable moments in the film, was completed in just three takes.
