Trivia & production notes
- Reginald Rose wrote the screenplay after serving as a juror on a manslaughter case in New York in early 1954, which inspired him to explore the rarely dramatized world of jury deliberations.
- The original television version aired on Westinghouse Studio One in September 1954 and won three Emmy Awards, including Best Direction and Best Written Dramatic Material.
- Sidney Lumet made his film directorial debut with 12 Angry Men after establishing himself directing television adaptations of Reginald Rose's plays.
- The cinematographer Boris Kaufman, fresh off winning an Academy Award for On the Waterfront, was chosen specifically for his realist style.
- The entire film was shot in just 21 days on a budget of $337,000, with both Rose and Fonda taking salary deferrals to stay under budget.
- The opening seven-minute continuous take contains 18 separate camera movements and establishes all twelve jurors without any dialogue about the case itself.
- Director Lumet shot scenes out of sequence by camera position rather than narrative order, requiring him to map out eye-lines for actors who weren't physically present on set using detailed diagrams.
- The cinematography deliberately evolves from wide-angle lenses at eye level to telephoto lenses from below, progressively narrowing the visual space to intensify claustrophobia throughout the film.
- The lighting design shifts across three stages—from bright daylight to oppressive afternoon heat to a rainstorm that breaks the tension at the film's emotional climax.
- Faith Hubley, who later became known for Oscar-winning animated films with her husband John, served as the script supervisor on the production.
