• John Singleton decided to direct the sequel after watching the first film and being inspired by his own experience growing up around street racing in South Central Los Angeles.
• Vin Diesel turned down a $25 million offer to reprise his role, feeling the screenplay lacked the quality of the original film and chose to appear in The Chronicles of Riddick instead.
• Rob Cohen, who had just directed Vin Diesel in XXX, declined to return as director once Diesel dropped out of the sequel.
• Ja Rule was offered $500,000 to reprise his role from the first film but turned it down because he had committed to a concert tour worth $13 to $14 million.
• Ludacris was cast as Tej Parker after both Redman, who was originally considered for the role, had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts with his show Method Red.
