Trivia & production notes
- James Mangold initially left the project for several years before returning as director in February 2006, three years after Columbia Pictures first announced the remake in June 2003.
- Tom Cruise expressed interest in playing the villain role, though the part ultimately went to Russell Crowe.
- On the first day of filming in October 2006, a horse was struck by a camera-carrying vehicle instead of veering off as planned, resulting in the animal being euthanized on set and prompting an investigation by the American Humane Association.
- The American Humane Association concluded that the horse accident was caused by dual training methods and the rider's unfamiliarity with the mount, recommending no charges against producers.
- After filming wrapped, the owners of Cerro Pelon Ranch petitioned to keep the $2 million set expansion, which comprised 75 percent of all sets on the ranch, and the county approved the request to allow future revenue generation.
- Lionsgate moved the release date forward from October 5 to September 7, 2007, to compete against other Westerns like The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and No Country for Old Men.
- The studio president cited the strategy of releasing early during a crowded fall season so other films would be measured against 3:10 to Yuma, a strategy Lionsgate had previously used with Crash before that film won Best Picture.
- The film received two Academy Award nominations at the 80th Academy Awards for Best Original Score and Best Sound Mixing.
- Critics noted that the remake is darker and more action-oriented than the 1957 original, incorporating contemporary political and moral themes while maintaining the core morality play structure.
- Ben Foster's performance as Charlie Prince drew particular acclaim from reviewers, with one critic describing the character as the real scene-stealer of the film.
