Trivia & production notes
- Director Rajkumar Hirani significantly rewrote Chetan Bhagat's novel Five Point Someone into a screenplay with a proper plot structure, since the original book was too anecdotal for film format.
- After completing two Munna Bhai films, Hirani decided to step away from the franchise because he felt exhausted working on consecutive projects in the same format.
- Hirani visited multiple engineering colleges, including those under the Indian Institutes of Technology in Mumbai and Delhi, to authentically capture the lives and appearance of engineering students for the film.
- The lead character Rancho's inspiration remains disputed: Hirani attributed him to a fellow FTII student, producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra claimed the character was based on himself, and many speculated he was based on educator Sonam Wangchuk, though Aamir Khan later denied this.
- Shah Rukh Khan was initially Hirani's choice for the lead role but declined due to prior commitments, leading the director to eventually cast Aamir Khan.
- Ranbir Kapoor, then a relative newcomer, refused the lead role but accepted a short cameo appearance instead.
- An actor named Rajeev Ravindranathan shot scenes for two months before being replaced by R. Madhavan so the production could cast a more established face.
- Boman Irani initially hesitated to play Dr. Viru Sahastrabuddhe and recommended Irrfan Khan for the role, only taking it on after Khan refused.
- Anushka Sharma auditioned for the female lead role by reciting monologues from Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., but was rejected and made her film debut in a different project instead.
- Ali Fazal, playing the small role of Joy Lobo, stated that the character arc mirrored a tragic real-life incident and caused him to experience depression.
