Trivia & production notes
- Frank Miller's graphic novel 300 was inspired by The 300 Spartans, a film he first watched when he was six years old.
- Zack Snyder was hired to direct 300 in June 2004 after he had previously attempted to adapt another Frank Miller work before his feature film debut with the Dawn of the Dead remake.
- Snyder photocopied individual panels from the comic book to use as visual reference points, planning each shot to match or transition between these predetermined frames.
- Some of the weapons created for 300, including shields, spears, and swords, were recycled from the films Troy and Alexander.
- The production required over 600 costumes and included thirteen animatronic horses and one animatronic wolf.
- Filming took place entirely on bluescreens at Montreal's Icestorm Studios, with only a single scene of horses traveling through countryside shot outdoors.
- The sixty-day shoot was conducted in chronological order with a budget of $60 million.
- Gerard Butler sustained an arm tendon injury and developed foot drop during the physically demanding production.
- Post-production lasted a year and involved ten special effects companies, with Hybride Technologies adding over 1,500 visual effects shots.
- A process called "The Crush" was developed to manipulate colors by increasing contrast between light and dark, giving scenes a gritty illustrative feel while maintaining realism.
