• Tom Shadyac, a gag writer, pitched the rewritten script to Morgan Creek Productions chairman James G. Robinson and was hired as director for his feature film directorial debut.
• Rick Moranis, Judd Nelson, and Alan Rickman were all considered for the Ace Ventura role before Jim Carrey was cast after Robinson saw his performance on the sketch comedy show In Living Color.
• Filmmakers considered making Ace Ventura a female character and casting Whoopi Goldberg in the role.
