• Guy Ritchie was announced as director in October 2016, with the studio planning an ambitious, nontraditional take that would retain the musical elements of the original film.
• Disney originally intended to tell the story in a nonlinear format before ultimately choosing a different narrative structure.
• Vanessa Taylor was hired to polish John August's screenplay, focusing on character development and script doctoring.
• The casting process for Aladdin and Jasmine lasted four months, with over 2,000 actors and actresses auditioning, as producers struggled to find a male lead of Middle Eastern or Indian descent in his 20s who could both act and sing.
• Naomi Scott was cast as Jasmine partly because she represents the cultural mixing of the Silk Road region, being the daughter of an English father and a Gujarati Ugandan-Indian mother.
