• Screenwriter Linda Woolverton developed the concept of an adult Alice returning to Wonderland during a difficult period in her personal life marked by death, divorce, and relocation.
• Tim Burton was the only director considered for the project because Disney believed his unique vision was essential to give the story a special look and memorable characters.
• Burton structured the film around the poem Jabberwocky and refers to the creature by the poem's name rather than the alternate name used within the poem itself.
• Tim Burton originally planned to cast Frances Bean Cobain as Alice, but she declined the role to focus on her college studies.
