Trivia & production notes
- Screenwriter Linda Woolverton developed the concept of an adult Alice returning to Wonderland during a difficult period in her personal life marked by death, divorce, and relocation.
- Tim Burton was the only director considered for the project because Disney believed his unique vision was essential to give the story a special look and memorable characters.
- Burton structured the film around the poem Jabberwocky and refers to the creature by the poem's name rather than the alternate name used within the poem itself.
- Tim Burton originally planned to cast Frances Bean Cobain as Alice, but she declined the role to focus on her college studies.
- Mia Wasikowska submitted her audition tape in February 2008 and underwent four additional auditions with Burton in the United Kingdom before being selected for the role in July 2008.
- Alice in Wonderland marks Johnny Depp's seventh collaboration with Tim Burton, continuing a partnership that began with Edward Scissorhands in 1990.
- Helena Bonham Carter thought Tim Burton was going to propose marriage when he asked her to his office, but he instead showed her character sketches and offered her the role of the Red Queen.
- Anne Hathaway initially turned down the role of Alice because she preferred to play the White Queen, and only got the White Queen role after another actress became unavailable due to scheduling conflicts.
- Jessica Brown Findlay auditioned for Alice and made it to the final three candidates before the role went to another actress.
- Christopher Lee was cast as the Jabberwocky, a role that was not initially disclosed when his involvement was announced.
