- Italian critic Giovanni Grazzini wrote that Fellini showed himself to be an artist at his peak, with the film displaying autobiographical content that revealed deeper understanding of both historical fact and the experience of an entire generation.
- The film was screened at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival but was not entered into the main competition.
- After winning the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 1975, Amarcord was quickly acquired for distribution internationally and proved to be Fellini's last major commercial success.
- British critic Russell Davies compared the film to works by Thornton Wilder and Dylan Thomas, noting that Fellini shot the entire piece in Roman film studios rather than on location.
- Roger Ebert gave the film a four-star rating and ranked it fourth on his best films of 1973 list, later adding it to his Great Movies collection.
