Trivia & production notes

• Alan Ball initially conceived American Beauty as a stage play in the early 1990s, partly inspired by the media frenzy surrounding the Amy Fisher trial, but abandoned the project after realizing the story would not translate effectively to theater.
• A moment of watching a plastic bag blow in the wind outside the World Trade Center around 1991-92 provoked an unexpected emotional response in Ball and influenced the film's themes.
• DreamWorks purchased the American Beauty screenplay outright for $250,000 in April 1998, outbidding several other studios, rather than simply optioning it.
• Sam Mendes discovered American Beauty while looking at a pile of eight scripts at a Creative Artists Agency representative's house and immediately knew he wanted to direct it.
• Mendes accepted the director position at the minimum salary allowed under Directors Guild of America rules—$150,000—and after taxes and agent commission, earned only $38,000.
• In the original script sent to actors and directors, Lester and Angela had sex, but Ball rewrote the scene after DreamWorks president Walter Parkes convinced him that the protagonist needed a moment of epiphany and refusal to achieve emotional redemption.
• Ball based Colonel Fitts on his suspicion that his own father was homosexual, using the character to explore a man who sacrificed his authentic self.
• An early draft of the script included flashback scenes showing Ricky and Jane being prosecuted for Lester's murder after being framed by Colonel Fitts, but these bookend scenes were removed during post-production.
• A complex freeway sequence involving a car crash and dead body was simplified to a conversation in Angela's car due to production scheduling constraints and budget limitations.
• Ball remained on set for rewrites and script interpretation throughout nearly all of filming, despite having signed a television development deal that required special permission to take a year off.
