- Bradley Cooper initially wanted Chris Pratt to play Chris Kyle, but Warner Bros. only agreed to acquire the film rights if Cooper starred himself.
- Steven Spielberg directed a lengthy 160-page screenplay that incorporated an enemy sniper character to add psychological conflict, but withdrew from the project due to budget constraints.
- Chris Kyle, the real-life subject of the film, was murdered on February 2, 2013, several months before Clint Eastwood took over as director.
- Clint Eastwood composed only "Taya's Theme" for the film and received no "Music by" credit, with Joseph S. DeBeasi handling additional music composition and editing.
- A milk factory in El Centro was repurposed as an abandoned date factory for the film's climactic scene where insurgents close in from all directions.
