Trivia & production notes
- James Cameron conceived Avatar in 1994, inspired partly by a vivid dream from his teenage years featuring a bioluminescent forest with fiber-optic trees and glowing purple moss.
- Cameron delayed Avatar production for years after 1996 because the technology needed to achieve his vision for computer-generated characters didn't yet exist.
- 20th Century Fox initially rejected Avatar in mid-2006 over budget concerns, but exercised a right of first refusal when Disney attempted to acquire the project, ultimately committing to the film that October.
- To secure Fox's backing, Cameron offered to cut his own salary in half and accept a lower percentage of the film's revenues if it underperformed commercially.
- Sam Worthington was cast as Jake Sully after an angry outburst during a secretive audition caught James Cameron's attention; Cameron felt Worthington's frustration demonstrated the 'grit' he was seeking for the role.
- Cameron decided between Chris Evans, Channing Tatum, and Sam Worthington by having each actor perform Jake's rallying speech to the Na'vi and comparing their readings.
- Matt Damon was considered for Jake Sully but became unavailable due to scheduling conflicts with The Bourne Ultimatum.
- Sam Worthington also briefly appears in the film as Jake's identical twin brother, Dr. Tom Sully.
- Motion-capture filming took place at the Hughes Aircraft stage in Playa Vista, Los Angeles, while live-action sequences were shot on soundstages at Weta Digital in Wellington.
- James Cameron made all on-set catering 100% plant-based to reflect his personal environmental values.
