Trivia & production notes
- Michael J. Fox suggested visiting the Old West during filming of the original Back to the Future, an idea director Robert Zemeckis and writer Bob Gale shelved until the third installment.
- The filmmakers constructed the 1885 Hill Valley set from scratch rather than using existing locations, with filming spread across Oak Park and Monument Valley in California plus a purpose-built set at Red Hills Ranch near Sonora.
- Both Back to the Future sequels were shot consecutively throughout 1989 over eleven months, with only a three-week break between Parts II and III, concluding in January 1990.
- Director Robert Zemeckis commuted between the Sonora film set and the Burbank dubbing stage via private plane while simultaneously shooting Part III and editing Part II, arriving for dailies review and then flying back to location the next morning.
- Mary Steenburgen was initially reluctant to accept the role of Clara Clayton until her children, who loved the first film, pressured her to do it.
- During the Hill Valley Festival Dance scene, Mary Steenburgen suffered a torn ligament in her foot from overzealous dancing with Christopher Lloyd.
- Robert Zemeckis approached ex-President Ronald Reagan through his agent Lew Wasserman about playing the Mayor of Hill Valley, but Reagan declined the role.
- Thomas F. Wilson, who played Buford Tannen, performed his own stunts and spent considerable time learning to ride horses and throw a lariat rather than using a stunt double.
- The Old West-style band featured in the film was played by American rock band ZZ Top.
- The film's climax coordinated a live 4-6-0 ten wheeler steam locomotive (the Sierra Railway 3) with actors, pyrotechnics, special effects, and numerous technicians to create what director Zemeckis considered a spectacular finale.
