Trivia & production notes
- Christopher Nolan was hired to direct Batman Begins in January 2003, two months before David S. Goyer signed on to write the script.
- Nolan cited Richard Donner's 1978 Superman as his primary inspiration, seeking to ground the character's origin story in recognizable reality rather than stylistic excess.
- The short story 'The Man Who Falls' by Denny O'Neil and Dick Giordano directly inspired the opening sequence of young Bruce Wayne falling into a well.
- Rachel Dawes was created as an original character after the writers decided they couldn't do justice to Harvey Dent in this film.
- Nolan deliberately excluded the Zorro film reference from Batman's origin to emphasize that becoming a superhero was Bruce Wayne's wholly original idea, not inspired by other masked heroes.
- Filming began in March 2004 on the Vatnajökull glacier in Iceland, which stood in for Bhutan, where the crew had to build an entire village and temple front doors in remote terrain.
- The Batcave set measured 250 feet long by 120 feet wide by 40 feet high and required twelve pumps to create a waterfall circulating 12,000 gallons of water.
- Nolan personally directed all scenes without using a second unit, maintaining complete creative control over the film's visual consistency.
- Dead bats were scanned to create digital models for the swarm scenes, as real bats proved impractical to direct on set.
- Nolan prioritized traditional stuntwork and scale models over computer-generated imagery, with digital effects reserved mainly for establishing shots and the climactic monorail sequence.
