Trivia & production notes
- Warner Bros. invested $2 million in acquiring the Gotham City sets at Pinewood Studios and placed them under 24-hour surveillance to preserve them for multiple sequels rather than rebuild them.
- Tim Burton initially resisted directing the sequel, calling the idea of it 'dumbfounded,' and only agreed to return after securing greater creative control following the departure of producers Peter Guber and Jon Peters.
- Burton later described the original Batman as his least favorite of his films and said it was 'occasionally boring,' with producer Denise Di Novi estimating only about 50% of it was Burton's vision.
- Daniel Waters rewrote Sam Hamm's draft and deliberately avoided narrative threads and comic-book history from the first Batman film, focusing instead on artistic expression and the villains' stories.
- Michael Keaton requested the removal of a scene where Batman destroys a merchandise store and also pushed back on dialogue, asking that unscripted additions like the destruction of a Red Triangle gang member be cut from the script.
- Max Shreck was created as an original character to replace Harvey Dent/Two-Face, written as a satirical industrialist to convey that true villains don't always wear costumes.
- Danny DeVito was hesitant to play the Penguin until his close friend Jack Nicholson, who portrayed the Joker in the first Batman, persuaded him to take the role.
- Sean Young visited the Warner Bros. lot in a homemade Catwoman costume for an impromptu audition with Burton, who allegedly hid under his desk during the encounter, while Keaton and a producer briefly met with her.
- Annette Bening was initially cast as Catwoman but had to withdraw due to pregnancy, leading the studio to cast Michelle Pfeiffer after considering actresses including Madonna, Cher, and Susan Sarandon.
- Wesley Strick was hired to streamline Daniel Waters's 160-page first draft and condense the dialogue, though Warner Bros. executives required him to add a plot involving kidnapped firstborn sons and missile attacks that even Waters found confusing.
