Trivia & production notes
- Director Vittorio De Sica financed the film himself by raising money from friends after being unable to secure backing from any major studio.
- De Sica cast factory worker Lamberto Maggiorani in the lead role after the actor brought his young son to an audition for the film.
- Eight-year-old Enzo Staiola was cast after De Sica spotted him watching the film's production on a street while the boy was helping his father sell flowers.
- The script was co-written by De Sica and Cesare Zavattini, using only the title and a few plot devices from a little-known novel by poet and artist Luigi Bartolini.
- The film's final shot of Antonio and Bruno walking away into the distance was an homage to Charlie Chaplin films, De Sica's favorite filmmaker.
- Italian critics initially viewed the film with hostility for portraying Italians negatively, and novelist Luigi Bartolini criticized it for betraying the spirit of his book.
- Luchino Visconti, a fellow Italian neorealist director, objected to the use of a professional actor dubbing over Maggiorani's dialogue.
- The film influenced directors including Satyajit Ray, Ken Loach, and filmmakers of the Iranian New Wave such as Jafar Panahi.
- Norman Loftis's 1994 film Messenger is considered a remake of Bicycle Thieves.
- An episode of the American series Master of None titled "The Thief" was heavily influenced by Bicycle Thieves.
