• Wesley Snipes spent over two decades trying to get a Black Panther film made, starting in 1992, before eventually losing involvement when he was convicted of tax evasion in 2009.
• One major obstacle to developing Black Panther was confusion about whether the film concerned the Marvel character or the Black Panther Party political organization.
• Chadwick Boseman was cast as Black Panther without auditioning, instead having discussions with Marvel about his vision for the character.
• Director Ava DuVernay passed on directing Black Panther because she disagreed with Marvel on the story and refused to compromise her creative vision.
• Ryan Coogler was brought back into negotiations to direct Black Panther after the critical success of his film Creed in 2015.
• The filmmakers were heavily inspired by Ta-Nehisi Coates's run on the Black Panther comic, which was being written simultaneously with the film's development.
• The Dora Milaje's ceremonial betrothal aspect from the comics was intentionally not adapted for the film.
• Coogler wanted to include Spider-Man villain Kraven the Hunter in the film, but could not because Sony Pictures controls the rights to all Spider-Man characters.
