- Jessica Gao pitched a Black Widow story influenced by Grosse Pointe Blank, imagining Romanoff planted in a high school to assassinate a target and returning 20 years later to her reunion, but Marvel felt she was essentially pitching a She-Hulk film instead.
- Marvel Studios met with over 65 directors for the project by late April 2018, part of a studio-wide initiative to hire female directors for franchises.
- Lucrecia Martel was approached to direct but turned down the role after being told she wouldn't need to worry about action scenes, and she also criticized Marvel films' music and visual effects as horrible.
