- Denis Villeneuve initially hesitated to direct Blade Runner 2049 because he worried about damaging the original film's legacy.
- Licensing disputes over Philip K. Dick's novel had prevented any Blade Runner sequels from being made for nearly three decades before Alcon Entertainment acquired the rights.
- Ridley Scott stepped down as director when his commitment to Alien: Covenant took priority, but he made uncredited contributions to the screenplay and stayed on as executive producer.
- Christopher Nolan was considered as a potential director for the sequel, but he declined despite being a fan of the franchise.
