- The screenplay was originally titled Okavango and had languished in development at Warner Bros. for years before producers decided to reshape it around an African farmer caught between an American smuggler and a local diamond-mining organization.
- Screenwriter Charles Leavitt conducted extensive research into the diamond industry and deliberately wrote the film to portray it truthfully, anticipating potential lawsuits from De Beers and other mining corporations.
- Director Edward Zwick was hired as a rewriter on the script but became so engaged with the story that he agreed to also direct the film.
