Trivia & production notes

• Sacha Baron Cohen was originally cast to play Freddie Mercury but departed in 2013 due to creative differences, with the actor wanting an R-rated film focused on Mercury while Queen preferred a PG-rated band story.
• Ben Whishaw was considered as Cohen's replacement but left the project after seven months, citing scripting problems and slow progress.
• Rami Malek was selected for the role after casting director Susie Figgis suggested him and producers reviewed his work in Mr. Robot.
• Malek recorded a pre-production performance at Abbey Road Studios that was sent to Queen members for approval before he was officially hired.
• To prepare for the role, Malek worked with a movement coach and wore prosthetic teeth crafted by artist Chris Lyons, and studied Liza Minnelli's stage movements as inspiration since they influenced Mercury's performance style.
• While Malek sang some parts in the film, producers also used vocal stems from original Queen recordings and filled in sections with Canadian vocalist Marc Martel, a winner of Queen Extravaganza Live Tour auditions.
• Queen archivist Greg Brooks worked daily on set to recreate scenes as accurately as possible and answer production questions.
• About 100 extras were individually scanned 360 degrees and digitally replicated to create the appearance of larger crowds.
• Bryan Singer was fired as director in December 2017 after not returning to set following Thanksgiving week, with reports citing his late arrivals, clashes with Malek, and his mother's illness as contributing factors.
• Dexter Fletcher replaced Singer as director with approximately two weeks of principal photography remaining, completing the film without letting down the two-thirds already shot.
