Trivia & production notes
- Screenwriter Diana Ossana discovered Annie Proulx's short story just days after its publication in October 1997 and pitched it to her writing partner Larry McMurtry, who immediately called it a masterpiece.
- Director Gus Van Sant pursued Matt Damon and Joaquin Phoenix for the lead roles, but Damon declined by telling Van Sant he couldn't follow a gay-cowboy movie after already doing a gay film and a cowboy film.
- Multiple A-list actors approached by Gus Van Sant turned down the project, leading Van Sant to instead direct the 2008 film Milk about Harvey Milk.
- Ang Lee initially chose to direct Hulk instead of Brokeback Mountain but felt exhausted afterward and considered retirement, until the script came back to mind and tempted him to return to filmmaking.
- The film studio initially thought Heath Ledger was not masculine enough for the lead role, but screenwriters Ossana and McMurtry championed him after being impressed by his performance in Monster's Ball.
- Heath Ledger specifically requested to play Ennis rather than Jack because he found Ennis more complex as a character—a masculine and homophobic man unable to express himself.
- Anne Hathaway showed up to her audition for Lureen while still filming The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, wearing a ball gown and hairpiece from her other movie.
- Anne Hathaway lied to director Ang Lee about her horse-riding abilities to secure the role, then spent two months taking lessons to prepare.
- Though the story is set in Wyoming, the film was shot almost entirely in the Canadian Rockies in southern Alberta due to financial reasons, with the mountain in the film being a composite of Mount Lougheed, Fortress, and Moose Mountain.
- Alberta's environmental department initially prohibited bringing domestic sheep into the Rockies due to disease concerns, but eventually allowed filming on one mountain with the requirement that sheep be transported in and out every day.
