- Universal Pictures paid over $1 million for the Bruce Almighty spec script in 2000, with director Tom Shadyac attached to develop it through his production company Shady Acres.
- Jim Carrey signed on to star in March 2002 after Universal's planned comedy Dog Years with him was cancelled, making Bruce Almighty the studio's alternative project.
- Steve Oedekerk rewrote the script after Jim Carrey joined the project.
- The film's opening weekend of $67.9 million set a new record for Jim Carrey films, surpassing How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
- Bruce Almighty was banned in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Kuwait, and Qatar for portraying God as an ordinary man, though the bans in Egypt and Malaysia were eventually lifted after receiving the highest rating from those countries' censorship boards.
