Trivia & production notes
- Producers Peter Spears and Howard Rosenman optioned the screen rights to André Aciman's novel before it was even published in 2007, after seeing a galley proof.
- The film spent years in development hell after the producers met with three different sets of directors and writers, including Gabriele Muccino and Ferzan Özpetek, but none committed to the project.
- James Ivory wrote the screenplay over approximately nine months at locations including his own house, Guadagnino's kitchen table in Crema, and New York City, often without meeting with Guadagnino in person because the director was busy filming A Bigger Splash.
- The film's budget was slashed from $12 million to $3.4 million and the shooting schedule was cut from 12 weeks to 5 weeks after financiers deemed the initial estimates too expensive.
- James Ivory stepped down from his directorial role in 2016 because the distributor Memento Films International believed having two directors would be awkward and might result in conflicts on set.
- This was James Ivory's first produced screenplay since Le Divorce in 2003 and the only narrative feature he has written without also directing.
- Shia LaBeouf was initially set to star in the film alongside Greta Scacchi, but the production company deemed him unsuitable after his various troubles.
- Armie Hammer almost turned down the role of Oliver because the script contained nudity and he was hesitant about performing scenes he had never done on film before.
- Timothée Chalamet prepared for his role by taking daily Italian lessons, working out three times a week, and studying composition with Roberto Solci, despite already being fluent in French and skilled at piano and guitar.
- Esther Garrel was cast as Marzia without a formal audition after Guadagnino approached her in Paris, and she deliberately chose not to read the book before filming began.
