- Marvel spent six years in litigation with comic book creator Joe Simon over Captain America copyright ownership before settling in 2003, which delayed the film's development.
- A $525 million investment from Merrill Lynch in 2005 enabled Marvel Studios to independently produce ten films including Captain America, rather than licensing the rights to other studios.
- Jon Favreau approached Marvel to direct Captain America as a comedy but chose to make Iron Man instead in 2008.
- Joe Johnston was selected to direct partly because of his special effects work on the original Star Wars trilogy and Raiders of the Lost Ark, which influenced the filmmakers' desire to avoid a traditional period piece aesthetic.
- The creative team chose Hydra as the main antagonists instead of the Nazi Party, citing a desire to adapt the story through the Marvel Universe's perspective rather than a conventional World War II narrative.
- Daniel Simon, the lead vehicle designer, had previously designed vehicles for Tron: Legacy, and director Johnston cited Simon's book Cosmic Motors as evidence of his suitability for the role.
- The Red Skull's car was designed by blending two Mercedes-Benz models from the 1930s, the 540K and the G4.
