- Columbia Pictures acquired the film rights to Richard Phillips' story just weeks after his rescue from Somali pirates in May 2009.
- Tom Hanks committed to the project in March 2011 after reading a screenplay draft by Billy Ray.
- The four Somali actors were selected from more than 700 participants at a casting call held at the Brian Coyle Community Center in Minneapolis.
- Producers visited the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum to study the actual bullet-scarred lifeboat and military equipment used in the real hostage crisis to ensure accurate set recreation.
