Trivia & production notes
- Nicholas Pileggi began researching the book that became Casino after reading a 1980 Las Vegas Sun article about a domestic dispute between casino operator Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal and his wife Geri McGee, a former topless dancer.
- The Stardust Resort and Casino, which inspired the fictional Tangiers in the film, was the site of a skimming operation that siphoned between $7 and $15 million over six years and became the largest such FBI-exposed case when uncovered.
- Scorsese convinced Pileggi to reverse his plan of releasing the book first by encouraging him to develop the screenplay simultaneously, with the two collaborating on the script for five months toward the end of 1994.
- The filmmakers were forced to refer to Chicago as "back home" and use the phrase "adapted from a true story" instead of "based on a true story" due to legal concerns.
- Real-life mobster Frank Cullotta, who turned witness, served as a technical advisor, played a hitman in the film, and initially objected to his character participating in a murder before Scorsese convinced him it was necessary for the plot.
- The iconic opening explosion scene with Sam's car was shot three separate times, with the third take being the one used in the final film.
- Saul Bass designed the title sequence as his final work, with the cost totaling $11,316 not including his fees, justified by the technical complexity of creating a continuous explosion effect and calculating the precise flight path of the body.
- Filming took place at night inside the Riviera casino in Las Vegas with the nearby defunct Landmark Hotel serving as the entrance to replicate the fictional Tangiers resort, eliminating the need to construct a set.
- The film initially received an NC-17 rating from the MPAA for its violence and required several edits to be reduced to an R rating.
- Contrary to widespread legend that Robert De Niro's costume budget exceeded $1 million, costume designer Rita Ryack later revealed the actual amount was substantially lower.
