Trivia & production notes
- Stuart Beattie conceived the story for Collateral as a 17-year-old during a cab ride home from Sydney Airport, imagining a homicidal passenger casually conversing with an unsuspecting driver.
- The original treatment, titled 'The Last Domino', centered on an African-American female cop who witnesses a murder and included a romance subplot with a librarian, elements largely abandoned in the final film.
- HBO originally developed the project through Frank Darabont's production company Edge City before passing on it, leading DreamWorks executive Marc Haimes to read the script overnight and make an offer the following day.
- Fernando Meirelles initially agreed to direct but withdrew because the production required relocating to Los Angeles for eight months, and he envisioned the film as a comedy similar to Martin Scorsese's After Hours.
- Tom Cruise prepared for his role as Vincent the hitman by working covertly as a FedEx deliveryman in the weeks before filming to avoid being recognized.
- Michael Mann trained Tom Cruise in firearm use and hand-to-hand combat with a retired SAS soldier and developed an extensive backstory for Vincent that includes his parents' death and violent upbringing, none of which appears in the film.
- Michael Mann cast Jamie Foxx as Max after working with him on Ali, inspired by Foxx's vivid character work on In Living Color, and personally taught him about cab driving based on his own experience as well as his father's and grandfather's.
- Cinematographer Paul Cameron departed after three weeks of filming due to creative differences with Mann, and was replaced by Dion Beebe.
- Collateral was the first major motion picture to use the Viper FilmStream High-Definition Camera for extensive filming, with Mann employing the technology to capture Los Angeles's distinctive nighttime lighting.
