- Kevin Costner encouraged screenwriter Michael Blake to adapt his unsold 1980s screenplay into a novel after they worked together on Stacy's Knights in 1983, which helped get the project off the ground.
- Costner turned down a starring role in The Hunt for Red October to direct and star in Dances With Wolves instead.
- Multiple studios rejected the project, citing the declining popularity of Westerns, the failure of Heaven's Gate, and the script's length.
