Years after a plague devastates humanity, survivors in the ruins of San Francisco encounter a nearby community of intelligent apes. Trivia & production notes
- The spaceship from the original 1968 Planet of the Apes, named the Icarus, appeared in Rise of the Planet of the Apes as an intentional setup for a sequel.
- Director Rupert Wyatt left the project over concerns that the May 2014 release date would not allow enough time to complete the film properly, and was replaced by Matt Reeves, who had been developing a new Twilight Zone film.
- Andy Serkis signed on to reprise his role as Caesar for a seven-figure deal, making him the first cast member announced for the sequel.
- James Franco's character Will Rodman and Freida Pinto's character Caroline Aranha did not return because both characters died from the Simian Flu.
- Filming began in April 2013 on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, chosen for its forests and diverse landscapes that matched the film's setting.
- The production also filmed in New Orleans, including at the abandoned Six Flags New Orleans park.
