Trivia & production notes
- Ryan Reynolds became interested in playing Deadpool after learning the character describes his appearance in the comics as 'Ryan Reynolds crossed with a Shar-Pei'.
- Tim Miller made his directorial debut on Deadpool after working on visual effects for X-Men films, partly because he had created the Academy Award-winning animated short Gopher Broke.
- Fox executives gave director Tim Miller a low-six-figure budget to produce test footage in 2012 at his animation company Blur Studio, which Reynolds voiced, but the footage initially failed to convince the studio to greenlight the full film.
- Ryan Reynolds leaked the test footage for Deadpool online in July 2014, a move he initially hid from director Tim Miller; he finally admitted to the leak in September 2025.
- After the test footage leaked and generated massive fan enthusiasm, Fox green-lit Deadpool just two months later in September 2014 with a February 2016 release date.
- Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick spent six years writing drafts of the Deadpool script, with approximately 70 percent of their first draft making it into the final film.
- The writers initially opposed making Deadpool an origin story, but Reynolds convinced them to blend a modern Deadpool narrative with an origin story connected through the character's narration and fourth-wall breaking.
- The character Negasonic Teenage Warhead was added to the film specifically because the writers wanted an X-Men character as a foil to Deadpool and chose her primarily for her distinctive name from the available Fox characters.
- Fox cut the film's budget by $7-8 million to $58 million just 48 hours before giving official approval, forcing a last-minute rewrite that removed about nine pages from the 110-page script, including a motorcycle chase and a costly third-act gun fight.
- The post-credits scene parodies the equivalent scene from Ferris Bueller's Day Off, with Deadpool breaking the fourth wall in a bath robe while confirming Cable will appear in the sequel.
