Trivia & production notes
- Winona Ryder pitched the Dracula screenplay to Francis Ford Coppola during a meeting meant to clear the air after she had been cast in The Godfather Part III, which Ryder believed had made Coppola dislike her.
- When Coppola first glanced at the Dracula script Ryder handed him, he became immediately interested upon seeing the word 'Dracula' because it was one of his favorite stories from his childhood at camp.
- Gary Oldman agreed to play Count Dracula primarily because it was an opportunity to work with Coppola, though he also wanted to deliver the line 'I've crossed oceans of time to find you.'
- Christian Slater turned down the role of Jonathan Harker, a decision he later regretted.
- Coppola cast Keanu Reeves as Jonathan Harker specifically because he was a 'matinée idol' type that fit what Coppola felt was needed for the underwritten role.
- To lower his voice by one octave for the role of Dracula, Gary Oldman took lessons with a singing teacher during preparation.
- Coppola intentionally isolated Gary Oldman from the rest of the cast during filming, keeping him on a separate property and arranging for him to meet the other actors for the first time only during set rehearsals.
- Coppola brought his principal actors to his 1,700-acre Napa Valley winery and estate for improvisations and exercises including reading the novel aloud and communal dinners to build relationships for the film.
- Coppola hired acting coach Greta Seacat to coach Winona Ryder and Anthony Frost for their erotic scenes because he felt uncomfortable discussing sexuality directly with the young actresses.
- Winona Ryder and Gary Oldman had a significant falling out early in filming and struggled to work together afterward, with Ryder later describing the experience as creating a sense of danger on set, though the two later became friends.
