- Tim Burton created the initial concept for Edward Scissorhands as a teenage drawing inspired by his own experiences of isolation and difficulty maintaining friendships in suburban Burbank.
- Caroline Thompson wrote the screenplay as a spec script while Burton was in pre-production on Beetlejuice, and she drew inspiration from her own novel First Born about an abortion that came back to life.
- Burton originally envisioned Edward Scissorhands as a musical before abandoning the concept.
- After achieving A-list status with Batman, Burton chose to make Edward Scissorhands for Fox instead of pursuing Warner Bros. offers for Batman Returns or Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian.
- Johnny Depp was Tim Burton's first choice for Edward despite being unfamiliar with Depp's popular role in 21 Jump Street at the time.
- Tom Cruise met with Burton about the lead role but asked for a happier ending, while Tom Hanks, William Hurt, Robert Downey Jr., and Michael Jackson also expressed interest in playing Edward.
