Trivia & production notes
- Stanley Kubrick first read Arthur Schnitzler's Dream Story in 1968 while seeking a follow-up project to 2001: A Space Odyssey, launching a development process that would span over two decades.
- Throughout the 1980s, Kubrick considered Steve Martin, Woody Allen, Tom Hanks, Bill Murray, Dustin Hoffman, Warren Beatty, Albert Brooks, Alan Alda, and Sam Shepard for the lead role before the project was revived in 1994.
- Michael Herr, who had helped write Full Metal Jacket, turned down Kubrick's invitation to revise the script because he feared being underpaid and having to commit to an extended production.
- Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman were cast after visiting Kubrick at his English estate to discuss the project, following which Kubrick awarded them both the roles.
- John Turturro claimed in a 2025 interview that Kubrick had written the role of Nick Nightingale specifically for him, but Turturro accidentally declined due to a misunderstanding.
- Harvey Keitel left the production after feeling disrespected by Kubrick, with the conflict escalating when Kubrick demanded he perform dozens of takes for a scene of his character simply walking through a doorway.
- The shoot stretched to over 15 months when Kubrick's original three-month production schedule was repeatedly extended, with individual scenes filmed as many as 95 times, including one shot of Cruise walking through a door.
- Vinessa Shaw was contracted for just two weeks and one scene but remained on set for two months as production ballooned, and she was hired based on an audition tape without ever meeting Kubrick in person.
- Due to Kubrick's fear of flying, the entire film was shot in England except for exterior New York City footage, which was then rear-projected behind Cruise during street sequences.
- Production designers were sent to Manhattan to measure street widths and photograph newspaper vending machine locations so the filmmakers could recreate Greenwich Village in meticulous detail at Pinewood Studios.
