Trivia & production notes
- Vin Diesel's cameo in Tokyo Drift gave Universal enough confidence to bring back the original cast and revive the franchise rather than continue with new characters.
- The production built approximately 240 cars in the San Fernando Valley, though most replica vehicles had significantly less power than the real cars they were meant to represent.
- The iconic Dodge Charger used in the film was actually a 1969 model modified to look like a 1970, because the original 1970 Charger from the first movie was being completely restored and couldn't be used.
- For the desert chase scene, the production created a dune buggy with a Nissan Skyline R34 shell rather than use an actual Skyline, because building authentic versions of the car was too difficult.
- The mine shaft tunnel sequence was shot entirely with real cars in live-action, with the tunnel environment added later in CGI rather than filming the whole scene digitally.
- The opening tanker explosion was inspired by the disaster film Twister, the James Bond movie Licence to Kill, and YouTube videos.
- Brian Tyler composed the score and recorded it with the Hollywood Studio Symphony at the Newman Scoring Stage at 20th Century Fox.
- The official soundtrack was released through Star Trak with production primarily handled by The Neptunes, featuring artists like Pitbull and Robin Thicke.
- The Japanese version of the film included the song 'Before I Decay' by Japanese rock band The Gazette instead of tracks from the international release.
- Principal photography took place over seven months, from February to August 2008, with filming in Los Angeles and the Dominican Republic.
