Trivia & production notes
- Jeffrey Reddick originally wrote the script as a spec submission for The X-Files television series, inspired by a real story about a woman whose mother had a premonition about her flight and convinced her to switch to a different plane that didn't crash.
- New Line Cinema asked Reddick to change the survivors from adults to teenagers after the success of Scream demonstrated the marketability of horror films centered on young characters.
- Directors James Wong and Glen Morgan intentionally avoided giving Death a physical form as an antagonist, instead making everyday objects and occurrences the primary threat, though Wong and Morgan later expressed regret about this choice since it prevented merchandise opportunities like costumes and action figures.
- Glen Morgan incorporated a personal experience into the script where he heard John Denver announced on a loudspeaker at Vancouver airport and found it eerie given that Denver had recently died in a plane crash.
- Devon Sawa was cast as lead character Alex Browning after directors initially hesitated and requested he perform again; Morgan was convinced after reviewing Sawa's work in the 1999 film Idle Hands.
- Seann William Scott, known for American Pie, was surprised to find his character Billy Hitchcock written as overweight in the original script, but the writers eventually removed this trait for him.
- Tony Todd was cast as mortician William Bludworth specifically because director James Wong believed Todd's distinctive deep voice would contribute an eerie quality to the film.
- Kristen Cloke, who played teacher Valerie Lewton, was married to director James Wong at the time of filming.
- While the film depicts Flight 180 exploding at John F. Kennedy International Airport, the crew actually used Vancouver International Airport for filming the airplane sequences.
