Trivia & production notes
- Universal initially planned to film the sixth and seventh Fast and Furious movies back-to-back with a connected storyline, but weather issues at filming locations and scheduling pressures led to scrapping this approach.
- Justin Lin stepped down as director after Fast Furious 6 rather than direct the seventh film on an accelerated schedule, as Universal wanted a summer 2014 release and he didn't want to do post-production on the sixth film simultaneously with pre-production on the seventh.
- James Wan, primarily known for horror films, was brought in to direct Furious 7, replacing Justin Lin.
- Pikes Peak Highway in Colorado was closed in September 2013 to film driving sequences for the movie.
- Abu Dhabi was chosen as a filming location over Dubai because of Abu Dhabi's 30 percent tax rebate scheme for film productions.
- Weta Digital reconstructed Paul Walker's character using over 350 visual effects shots, primarily repurposing footage of Walker's face to complete scenes after his death.
- Digital Domain created over 800 visual effects shots with a team of nearly 300 artists split between Los Angeles and Vancouver locations.
- The film's final Los Angeles chase sequence featured all cars digitally recreated as computer-generated imagery for fully CGI shots.
- The drone antagonist in Furious 7 drew visual inspiration from the U.S. Military's Global Hawk drone, an A-10 Warthog, and World War II-era aircraft including the Corsair and Helldiver.
- Dwayne Johnson joined filming in late October 2013 after finishing work on Hercules, entering the production over a month after principal photography had begun.
