Trivia & production notes
- Martin Scorsese discovered Herbert Asbury's 1928 book about New York's criminal underworld in 1970 and immediately saw it as the basis for an American epic about democracy's development.
- Scorsese pitched the project to screenwriter Jay Cocks by saying 'Think of it like a western in outer space,' and the two considered casting Malcolm McDowell in the lead role.
- Twenty years elapsed between Scorsese acquiring the screen rights in 1979 and the project actually moving into production, partly because recreating nineteenth-century New York's cityscape with period accuracy proved extremely difficult.
- Disney chairman Joe Roth rejected the film in 1997 because he deemed its violence inappropriate for a Disney-branded movie.
- After being turned down by Disney, Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox, Paramount, and MGM, Scorsese found backing through Harvey Weinstein's Miramax Films in 1999.
- Screenwriter Jay Cocks underwent nine revised drafts of the script, but was fired from the project after Harvey Weinstein demanded additional rewrites, with Hossein Amini writing the final two drafts without receiving credit.
- Robert De Niro and Willem Dafoe both had to leave the production during filming due to scheduling conflicts with other projects.
- Principal photography took place in New York and Rome from December 2000 to March 2001, with the film's budget ballooning to over $100 million, a 25 percent increase from the original estimate.
- The film's release was delayed for over a year; the final version contains a closing shot of the pre-9/11 New York City skyline with the intact World Trade Center towers, which the filmmakers chose to keep unaltered.
- Scorsese considered retiring from filmmaking after the contentious production experience with Harvey Weinstein, and has stated the theatrical cut at 168 minutes is his final version with no director's cut planned.
