Trivia & production notes
- Jerry Zucker's decision to direct Ghost marked his first solo directorial effort and his first dramatic film, having previously worked as part of the Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker comedy team.
- Frank Oz was initially set to direct but departed over budget constraints that conflicted with his creative vision, while Miloš Forman was fired by Paramount after the studio and screenwriter disagreed with his approach.
- Screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin was initially worried that comedy director Jerry Zucker would turn his script into a comedy, but changed his mind after being impressed by Zucker's philosophical outlook during a dinner.
- Patrick Swayze was cast only after screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin pitched the project to him behind director Jerry Zucker's back, following an interview where Swayze discussed his late father.
- Patrick Swayze personally advocated for Whoopi Goldberg to be cast as Oda Mae Brown, as both Zucker and Rubin were initially reluctant to hire her.
- The interior of Sam and Molly's loft was a reproduction of artist Michele Oka Doner's studio, reconstructed in a nearby Soho loft after she declined to allow filming in her actual home.
