Trivia & production notes
- Richard Maibaum, who had written or co-written all but three Bond films up to that point, was replaced as screenwriter for GoldenEye in August 1990.
- Timothy Dalton was contractually obligated to make three Bond films, and GoldenEye was intended to fulfill that commitment before legal disputes caused years of delay.
- A proposed earlier version of GoldenEye involved Bond recovering a stolen stealth fighter from mobsters, with the plot set in Vancouver and Las Vegas before being moved to Hong Kong.
- The Bond franchise nearly collapsed during the early 1990s when Italian financier Giancarlo Parretti's attempt to sell MGM's assets to finance his company buyout sparked legal battles between producers and studios over distribution rights.
- Timothy Dalton's original seven-year contract with the Bond producers expired in 1990, and the subsequent six-year development delay effectively ended his tenure in the role before GoldenEye was completed.
- Pierce Brosnan was originally set to replace Roger Moore in 1986 but was unavailable due to his commitment to the television series Remington Steele.
- Liam Neeson turned down the role of James Bond because his then-fiancée Natasha Richardson said she would not marry him if he accepted it.
- Paul McGann was the studio's second choice to play Bond, ready to step in if Pierce Brosnan had declined the role.
- Judi Dench's casting as M made her the first female to play the role in the film series, a decision widely believed to be inspired by Stella Rimington becoming head of MI5 in 1992.
- Sean Bean's character Alec Trevelyan was originally written as an older mentor figure named Augustus Trevelyan, with Anthony Hopkins and Alan Rickman both turning down the part before the role was rewritten as Bond's peer.
