• Gillian Flynn negotiated as part of the film deal to write the first draft of the screenplay herself, which was unusual since authors who adapt their own work are typically replaced by experienced screenwriters after that stage.
• David Fincher agreed to work with Flynn on the entire screenplay rather than bringing in an experienced screenwriter to take over after her first draft, which broke from typical Hollywood practice.
• Flynn condensed a 500-page novel with a complex plot into a screenplay while simultaneously touring to promote the book, completing her first draft by December 2012.
