Trivia & production notes
- Producer David O. Selznick spent two years casting the lead roles, including a $100,000 nationwide casting call that interviewed 1,400 unknown actors purely for publicity purposes.
- Clark Gable only became available for the role of Rhett Butler after Selznick negotiated directly with his father-in-law, MGM chief Louis B. Mayer, agreeing to split the $1.25 million production budget and future profits with the studio.
- Vivien Leigh was chosen as Scarlett O'Hara after Paulette Goddard, the other finalist, lost the role due to controversy surrounding her marriage to Charlie Chaplin.
- Director George Cukor was fired after less than three weeks of shooting, with actor Clark Gable's discomfort working with him cited as one explanation, though Cukor continued privately coaching the female leads afterward.
- Victor Fleming, who was directing The Wizard of Oz at MGM, was brought in to replace George Cukor and complete the film.
- Cinematographer Lee Garmes was replaced after one month when his footage was deemed too dark, and Ernest Haller took over for the remainder of production.
- Producer Selznick personally operated the explosive controls for the burning of Atlanta sequence, which was filmed using new façades built in front of old abandoned sets on the studio backlot.
- The production cost an estimated $3.85 million, making it the second most expensive film ever made at that time, surpassed only by Ben-Hur from 1925.
- Selznick hired a Southern dialect coach and manners expert after becoming concerned that Hollywood typically failed to accurately portray Southern accents, which he feared could harm the film's success.
- The Production Code was amended specifically to permit Rhett Butler's famous closing line containing the word 'damn,' contrary to the persistent legend that Selznick was fined $5,000 by the Hays Office for using it.
