Trivia & production notes
- Harold Ramis didn't laugh while reading Danny Rubin's original script but was drawn to its underlying spirituality and romantic elements, wanting to add more humor to the concept.
- Rubin chose to accept Columbia Pictures' offer with Ramis as director, trading creative control for a higher budget over an independent studio deal that would have given him $3 million and complete creative freedom.
- Ramis and Rubin structured the script around the five stages of grief model, using denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance as the framework for Phil's journey through the time loop.
- Ramis convinced Rubin to remove his original ending where Rita would also be trapped in her own time loop, believing audiences needed catharsis and would dislike this conclusion.
- Bill Murray and Harold Ramis immediately clashed over the script's tone, with Murray wanting to emphasize philosophical elements while Ramis insisted it was meant to be a comedy.
- Harold Ramis assigned Danny Rubin to work directly with Bill Murray on script revisions because Murray's constant early-morning phone calls to Ramis made it the only way to stop the conflict.
- Tom Hanks, Chevy Chase, and Michael Keaton were considered for the role of Phil Connors before Bill Murray was cast.
- Tom Hanks turned down the role because he feared being typecast as a nice person whose redemption audiences would expect, whereas Bill Murray's off-screen reputation for being difficult made the character's transformation less predictable.
- Michael Keaton later expressed regret about rejecting the role, confessing that he simply didn't understand the film at the time despite it being written as the type of wry, sardonic character he typically played.
- Danny Rubin originally wanted Kevin Kline for the role of Phil Connors and doubted Bill Murray had the necessary acting ability, but Ramis assured him this was exactly what Murray could deliver.
