• James Gunn originally envisioned a Guardians sequel centered on Rocket and Groot exploring the latter's origin story, but decided Peter Quill's backstory needed to come first.
• Adam Warlock was initially planned as a major new character but Gunn removed him from the script because he felt the film was becoming too crowded with characters.
• Marvel initially objected to Gunn including a mid-credits scene hinting at Adam Warlock, worried fans would expect the character in the upcoming Avengers films.
• Gunn considered killing off Gamora at the end of the film to give her a sacrificial arc, but Marvel convinced him otherwise because they had plans for the character to die in Avengers: Infinity War instead.
