Trivia & production notes
- James Gunn originally envisioned a Guardians sequel centered on Rocket and Groot exploring the latter's origin story, but decided Peter Quill's backstory needed to come first.
- Adam Warlock was initially planned as a major new character but Gunn removed him from the script because he felt the film was becoming too crowded with characters.
- Marvel initially objected to Gunn including a mid-credits scene hinting at Adam Warlock, worried fans would expect the character in the upcoming Avengers films.
- Gunn considered killing off Gamora at the end of the film to give her a sacrificial arc, but Marvel convinced him otherwise because they had plans for the character to die in Avengers: Infinity War instead.
- The sequel was set only two to three months after the first film because Gunn believed the team's fragile egos would make a story set years later unworkable.
- Gunn described his initial story idea for the sequel as risky and not really based on anything from the comics, being mainly an original creation.
- Filming took place in Atlanta, Georgia with major crew changes from the first film.
- Gunn created a 70-page document he called a scriptment that combined elements of both a script and treatment, outlining every beat of the movie.
- Baby Groot was a riskier creative choice than including Ego as a character, since adult Groot had been the most popular character from the first film.
- Gunn initially resisted killing off Yondu but ultimately decided the character's death was necessary to set up the third film, despite his friendship with actor Michael Rooker.
