Trivia & production notes
- Part 1 was filmed back-to-back with Part 2 over sixteen months, from February 2009 to June 2010.
- The decision to split the book into two films came from executive producer Lionel Wigram, who had to convince producer David Heyman by asking him to reconsider after rereading the material with screenwriter Steve Kloves.
- Director David Yates described Part 1 as a 'road movie' shot in a documentary-style approach rather than in the fantasy-adventure tone of previous installments.
- Set designer Stuart Craig, who worked on every previous Harry Potter film, was nominated for an Academy Award for his production design on Part 1.
- Craig based Malfoy Manor's exterior on Hardwick Hall, an Elizabethan house in England, adding a magical roof and surrounding forest to make it appear more sinister.
- Costume designer Jany Temime faced accusations of copying Fleur's wedding dress design from Alexander McQueen's Fall 2008 collection, though she explained the dress needed both elegance and magical elements like a phoenix motif symbolizing rebirth and eternal love.
- Alexandre Desplat replaced composer Nicholas Hooper, who had scored the two previous films, to create the score for the Deathly Hallows films.
- Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' song 'O Children' was featured in the film.
- Double Negative created an innovative visual effect for the Death Eaters by introducing a 'flayed man' stage between their smoky, fluid flying form and their solid live-action appearance when landing.
- Ben Hibon directed and designed the animated 'Tale of the Three Brothers' sequence, which was produced by Framestore.
