Trivia & production notes
- Part 2 was filmed back-to-back with Part 1 over roughly 16 months, from February 2009 to June 2010, with additional epilogue reshoots occurring in December 2010.
- Executive producer Lionel Wigram proposed splitting the book into two films, which producer David Heyman initially rejected before reconsidering after rereading the source material with screenwriter Steve Kleves.
- For the Gringotts Wizarding Bank set, the production design team created thousands of gold and silver pieces and constructed a mechanized floor that could rise at different levels to simulate overflowing treasure.
- Visual effects supervisor Tim Burke spent two years digitally rebuilding Hogwarts with Double Negative, including constructing invisible interiors visible only through windows and a destruction version of the school for the Battle of Hogwarts sequence.
- The epilogue's aging makeup for the main cast was initially unsatisfactory when leaked footage drew fan criticism, prompting director David Yates to reshoot the scene in December 2010 with redesigned makeup rather than attempting fixes through editing or CGI.
- Over 200 shots were converted to 3D, with director David Yates intentionally using the format to enhance storytelling through the sense of isolation and separation at emotionally appropriate moments.
- John Williams, who composed scores for the first three Harry Potter films, was unavailable due to scheduling conflicts, leading Alexandre Desplat to return as composer for Part 2 instead.
- Composer Alexandre Desplat incorporated John Williams's original themes more prominently in Part 2 than he had in Part 1.
- Production designer Stuart Craig designed the King's Cross scene through extensive experimentation with burnt-out aesthetics, underlit floors, and white coverings, involving numerous camera tests to determine proper exposure.
- St Pancras railway station was used as the opening shot for the film's "nineteen years later" epilogue sequence.
