Trivia & production notes
- Emma Watson nearly declined to return for the film due to concerns about typecasting, but ultimately decided the benefits outweighed the risks and that she could not imagine another actress playing Hermione.
- Director Terry Gilliam, who was J.K. Rowling's personal choice to direct the first Harry Potter film, refused to consider directing a later installment, saying Warner Bros. had their opportunity and failed to seize it.
- Christian Coulson, who played young Tom Riddle in Chamber of Secrets, was deemed too old at nearly 30 to reprise the role in flashback sequences for Half-Blood Prince.
- Helen McCrory was originally cast as Bellatrix Lestrange in Order of the Phoenix but had to withdraw due to pregnancy, later becoming available to play Narcissa Malfoy in Half-Blood Prince.
- Bill Nighy was director David Yates's first choice to play Minister for Magic Rufus Scrimgeour, but the character was cut from Half-Blood Prince; Nighy later played the role in Deathly Hallows - Part 1.
- Bob Hoskins auditioned for the role of Horace Slughorn but lost out to Jim Broadbent.
- Principal photography lasted nearly eight months, from September 24, 2007 to May 17, 2008, with cast members beginning filming at staggered intervals over several months.
- Scenes of the Hogwarts Express were filmed in Norway's Rauma Line mountains near the village of Bjorli rather than Scotland because the screenplay required snow and it did not snow during the planned Scottish filming dates.
- Night scenes filmed in Lacock village required residents to black out their windows with dark blinds, as filming took place from 5 pm to 5 am daily for three consecutive nights.
- David Yates was asked to begin pre-production on Half-Blood Prince while still completing the marketing campaign for Order of the Phoenix, which he had just directed.
