- J.K. Rowling demanded that the filmmakers cast only British and Irish actors, a requirement that led to Robin Williams being rejected for the role of Hagrid despite his interest in the part.
- Steven Spielberg initially negotiated to direct the film and wanted it to be an animated feature produced by DreamWorks with American child actor Haley Joel Osment voicing Harry Potter before eventually leaving the project.
- Chris Columbus secured the director position by requesting that his meeting with Warner Bros. executives be scheduled last among 25 candidates, allowing him to make a lasting final impression.
